It's Summer Time: Assateague Island National Seashore

It's summer time, which means, I'm thinking about the beach. The hubby and I try to make it out to the eastern shore of Maryland at least once each summer to spend the day soaking up the sun and swimming in the cold Atlantic Ocean. The only beach that we ever go to are those open to the public on Assateague Island National Seashore.  One must beware of the wild ponies that run around the island (which I now lovingly call "Pony Poop Island"). One can also go camping on the island if you can secure a coveted reservation. However, it is beach camping, which means you end up with sand everywhere. We can say we did it once, but we probably wouldn't do it again, which is why this is a day trip destination.

Here are some images from our camping trip there a couple of summers ago.

We saw ponies as soon as we got to the island.

The tourists love the ponies and walk right up to them (even though you are not supposed to).

Learning about the grasses located on the island.

Look, phragmites.

Views from the Life of the Forest trail.

Some cacti growing on the ground.

About to hike the Life of the Marsh Trail

Butterflies getting some nectar.

Do you see the crab??

There are killifish in here, towards the right of the picture.

The campground.

The beach!!

 Ponies on the beach.

There is a $15 entrance fee for this beach, but I say it is well worth it. The beaches are much nicer than those found down the road at Ocean City. If you are in the D.C. metro area, I suggest hitting up this National Seashore.
